2011-ieji – Mikalojaus Konstantino Čiurlionio išėjimo šimtmečio metai. Praėjęs laikas įrodė, kad menininkui gyvenant retai skambėjusi, likusi rankraščiais ir nebaigtais eskizais jo kūryba atspindėjo esminius Europos muzikos lūžio procesus. Tai XX a. pradžios paribiuose susidurianti romantiškoji idioma ir aktyvūs gimstančio modernizmo ženklai. Čiurlionio muzikoje telkėsi kompozitorių slaptaraščių, kompozicinės medžiagos „gamybos" būdų paieškos, šios medžiagos tolesnės struktūrinės ir formalios būties numatymas. Čiurlionio kompozitoriaus mįslę suvokti padeda jo sielos ir talento antrininkas Čiurlionis dailininkas. Atėjusi iš romantiškų inspiracijų skliauto, Čiurlionio kūryba buvo vizionieriška XX a. naujosios muzikos perspektyvos kryptimi.

Knyga „Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911): jo laikas ir mūsų laikas" siekia nubrėžti plačius Čiurlionio kūrybos tyrimo horizontus, naujai peržiūrėti esamus požiūrius ir, remdamiesi naujausiais tyrimais, pereiti į kitą Čiurlionio kūrybos pažinimo lygmenį.

The book Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911): His Time and Our Time is dedicated to Čiurlionis' hundredth death commemoration and instigates for a deeper revision and assessment of his legacy. The goal of delineating the wide horizons of interdisciplinary research in the oeuvre of Čiurlionis combined efforts of more than thirty art researchers, philosophers, musicologists, researchers of cultural discourse from Lithuania and abroad. Not only the wide approach in studying the oeuvre of the Lithuanian genius is among the most significant features of this collection of studies and scientific articles, but also the revision of approaches directing towards another level of studying the works of Čiurlionis.

"The entire creation of Čiurlionis is a tempting challenge of semiotic analysis" (Eero Tarasti), therefore riddles of his art in this book are disclosed by unexpected ramification of studies in applying the method of semiotic meta-language, crypto-representation, numerology, intertextuality and other discourses. Efforts in defining the place of Čiurlionis on the map of culture and arts in the 20th century are another clear sign of affinity and solidarity among the authors of this book. The "evidence" leading to the credible marking of the value of Čiurlionis' oeuvre in the context of modern art is the visionary sense of epistemic refractions in the art of Europe – the vision of perspective of the New Music and Modern Abstract Art in the 20th century.

The digital supplements – two CDs (CD-audio and CD-extra with video catalogue) give the readers an opportunity to analyze manuscripts and documents, study pictures and listen to the recorded music. All documents provided in the supplements were taken from the National Art Museum of M. K. Čiurlionis in Kaunas and the stock of audio recording publishers. We hope the book will encourage further studies of Čiurlionis' creation, as secrets, signs and thoughts of this genius are not yet fully investigated and read for today.
